Location: JAPAN HOUSE Gallery, Level 2

Japan’s unique lifestyle and culture have evolved over ten thousand years, being nurtured and refined since the Jōmon period (13,000 - 300 BCE). Highlighting this evolution, the exhibition, “DESIGN MUSEUM JAPAN | Bridging Design and Life,” showcases six of Japan’s top creators selected to research uniquely Japanese “design treasures,” which exemplify the design culture of a specific area of Japan. The exhibition presents these designs, often a result of community-based design, their background stories and their connection to the region, along with perspectives from the creators who compiled the research.

“DESIGN MUSEUM JAPAN | Bridging Design and Life,” is on view at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles from January 26, to April 14, 2024. The six internationally renowned Japanese creators – Tamae Hirokawa, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, Reiko Sudo, Kinya Tagawa, Tsuyoshi Tane, and Koichiro Tsujikawa, come from various areas of design practice, from product design to film and video production, from fashion and textile creation to video game design and architecture. They have investigated the creative aesthetics unique to the diverse regions and localities of Japan. Each creator has packed the examples they have gathered from one of Japan’s prefectures along with their histories and supporting artifacts into a “traveling design museum” showcasing Japanese creativity.

Explore the Exhibition

The exhibition dedicates a series of display cubes to each investigation, in and around which the creators showcase the specific “design treasure” from their chosen region. Presentations include stunning videos documenting each creator’s research process, produced especially by NHK (The Japan Broadcasting Corporation) Japan’s prolific International EMMY® winning public media broadcaster. Visitors will also be introduced to the incredible creators themselves and their own design practices. An interactive “workshop” section invites visitors to share their answers to the question “What does Design mean to you?” on a gallery wall and to contribute examples of their unique cultures and daily life that can be considered “design treasures.” Guests are also encouraged to mark sites of interesting design they have found across the country on an expansive “design map” of the US.

Organized by NHK, Japan’s only public media broadcaster, together with NHK Promotions and NHK Educational, the exhibition is part of Japan House’s global touring exhibition program. The exhibition was first shown in Tokyo and at JAPAN HOUSE São Paulo in 2023, arriving at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles in January 2024, and will continue to JAPAN HOUSE London.

Valley Runners LA :

Valley Runners LA Instagram

Valley Runners LA was started in 2014 by a group of five friends who were driving to downtown LA in search of being part of the running community. Instead of constantly making the trek to LA they thought, “Let’s start a run club in The Valley!” From there, it kept growing into what VRLA is today! The group keeps thriving thanks to the ongoing love & support of the running community. Find them Thursday nights at 8pm running in different locations around the San Fernando Valley. Check their Instagram page @valleyrunnersla for details!

Valley Runners LA's mission is to promote running and wellness across the San Fernando Valley. The run club aims for participants to feel motivated and supported to attain their running goals within a fun group environment.

Northampton School for Boys Big Band and Folk Ensemble Tour: Los Angeles 2024

Northampton School for Boys Big Band and Folk Ensemble Tour: Los Angeles 2024

Northampton School for Boys is an oversubscribed state boys’ school (1600 pupils). We are lucky to have a co-ed Sixth Form (with girls joining us from several local Schools to study). The school was founded in 1541 and has been on our current site since 1911.

Notable alumni:

Sir Malcolm Arnold – Composer

Sir Francis Crick – Scientist (discovered the double helix structure of DNA)

Matt Smith – Actor (Eleventh Doctor Who)

The Department is a busy place - over 20 ensembles rehearse weekly from String Quartets and Jazz Combos to Symphony Orchestras and Concert Bands. Nearly 300 individual instrumental lessons take place each week – taught by over 20 instrumental staff.

Curriculum lessons are weekly for KS3 (11 – 14) we see them for 90 mins. GCSE (15 – 16) and A Level Music (17 – 18) see pupils develop skills in historical analysis, composition and performance- we teach them for 2 doubles (GCSE) and three at A Level.

Including this year some of our ensembles have won national awards at the NCBF (National Concert Band Festival) and Music for Youth Finals. Our Big Band has worked with both the BBC Big Band and The Glenn Miller Orchestra and has also toured Florida working with Chuck Owen and the musicians at the University of Southern Florida and New York.

Our Folk Ensemble (Bodhran Bodhran – pronounced like the 80s pop band Duran Duran) was formed a year ago and has gone from strength to strength – lots are not here in Los Angeles, but the group normally consists of 3 fiddles, 2 cellos and lots of guitarists – Richard Stark conducts and rehearses the group and they put on regular dances and ceilidhs.

Programme to include:

NSB Big Band

Hit the Bricks – Gordon Goodwin

Tutu – Miles Davis/Marcus Miller arr. Mossman

Estate – Martino/Brighetti arr. John Wasson

The Way We Were (trombone feature – Guz Lopez Woodward) – Bergman/Hamlisch arr. Taylor

We Don’t Talk About Bruno – Lin Manuel Miranda arr. Murtha

Moondance – Van Morrison arr. Sheppard

In a Mellow Tone – Ellington arr. Nelson

Norwegian Wood – Lennon/McCartney arr. Holman

Out of the Doghouse – Morales

Soul Bossa Nova – Jones arr. Stitzel

Kwanzaa Celebration

Meet us in Center Courtyard for a day of celebration including entertainment, food, live performances and more!

Kwanzaa is a time of learning, family, and celebration. During the seven-day festival of Kwanzaa, families come together to celebrate Pan-African culture, and honor the ancestry and community that unites them. Each day reflects a principle, and our program is celebrating each one with the support of our local community

Celebrate Nguzo Saba, the seven principles of Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work), Ujamaa (Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith) at Ovation Hollywood at our entirely FREE event.

Programming to include:

  • Performance from the Ujima dance & drum troupe

  • Kwanzaa cookie decorating craft from Mwokaji Cakery (Tamara "Breezee" Brown, as seen competing on Food Network's Halloween Baking Championship Season 2 & Season 6!)

  • Kids Kinara craft

  • Kids drums to join in with Ujima!
