When Steve Edelson took over the primo club venue Los Globos on Sunset Blvd. a year ago, the acquisition was met with a mixture of elation (“hooray… a big new Silver Lake club venue!”), envy (many nightlife bigwigs had been eyeing the Latin music hub for years) and discontent (its soft opening had some after-hours parties that area residents were not exactly happy about, and eventually became a problem).
As of today, the latter will be satisfied, at least, temporarily. Edelson tells us exclusively that the LA Police Commission unexpectedly canceled the venue’s dance and live music permits, yesterday (Mon., Oct. 29). It will take 45 days to reissue them, he says. Edelson plans to do so, but in the meantime, Los Globos will be open only for private parties between now and New Year’s Eve, no promoted club nights.
If some Silver Lake residents are glad for the break, music and dance club lovers wont be. Globos had been thriving more than ever, and the city’s most popular promoters have been throwing shindigs there recently. Its Halloween events this past weekend were both sold out, a perfect example of the meld of lively and diverse scenes that Globos had become a vortex for on each of the building’s levels: Dance Right/MFG’s party and IHeartComix/Mustache Mondays’ “Homoween” with Ssion. Edelson stayed true to what he told us when he first bought the space too- the Latin music that it was known for remained, and the club became a true reflection of the neighborhood.
Scheduled this week at the venue alone: LA Record’s “Halloween Fever in Outer Space” AND Vice magazine’s “Dia De Los Muertos” (both TONIGHT), The Spooky Ride, which was to debut the “La Esquina tequila and Rum bar ” (WEDNESDAY) and this SATURDAY, the highly anticipated return of Jonathan Toubin’s NYC favorite “Night Train & Soul Clap Dance Off,” to LA.
We will keep you posted on where all of the above and more will be re-located. And will be updating you here as the story develops…
- We were the first to notify Jonathan Toubin about Los Globos closure and he tells us Blundertown/New York Night Train’s Soul Clap Dance off has been moved to the Monty Bar, where we saw him spin at the opening party and where a benefit was held for him last year after his freak accident. Great spot!
-Straight from Fancy Space People‘s Don Bolles: the “LA Record Halloween in Outer Space” show which features FSP along with Babes and Bloody Death Skull has been moved to Echo Country Outpost, 1770 Glendale Blvd.
-As of an 1:30 pm, Vice Magazine’s Facebook Page claims their Hola Indio party is still on. It’s a private party so this may be the reason. The hardcore hipsters who read VICE don’t dance anyway, right???
